Report on the International Specialized Seminar "Opportunities and Challenges of Using Large Diameter Tunnel Boring Machines in Iran" Held on Wednesday, July 24, 2024

خبر

The international specialized conference "Opportunities and Challenges of Using Large Section Tunnel Boring Machines in Iran" was held on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, by the Iranian Tunneling Association in collaboration with Tehran Metro Company at the Tehran Metro Company Conference Hall, with the presence of about 250 specialists from various groups including clients, consultants, contractors, manufacturers, suppliers, and with the scientific leadership of Dr. Jamal Rostami, Vice President of the International Tunneling Association and Professor at the University of Colorado, USA. The aim of the conference was to discuss and familiarize participants with the use of full-face tunnel boring machines with diameters greater than 12 meters and to explore the feasibility of employing them in various projects within the country. This topic is a challenging and ambiguous issue for some national projects, with decision-making on their use having been delayed for some time. It is worth mentioning that the largest machines currently used in the country (out of a total of 45 machines) have a diameter of 9.4 meters for tunnels in soil and 6.8 meters for rocky terrains. At the end, a specialized panel including Dr. Jamal Rostami, Engineer Masoud Dorosti, Dr. Mohammad KhosroTash, and Dr. Sadegh Tarigh Azali was formed. The panel conducted Q&A sessions and discussions, concluding that the necessity of employing large section tunnel boring machines in Iran was affirmed, emphasizing the urgent need to introduce this technology to the country. Due to the sensitivities associated with this technology, the importance of meticulous implementation and accurate execution was emphasized. In a presentation by Rahyab Mellat Consulting Engineers, the possibility of utilizing this technology for constructing the required long tunnels in Section Three of the Tehran North Freeway was discussed from various perspectives, including the necessity and need for these machines, the diameter, type, and general specifications of the required machine, feasibility of procurement, transportation from the manufacturer to the site, assembly and commissioning, risks, and benefits. The need for this technology in the execution of this project was strongly emphasized.
